Preparing Your Quilt

A commissioned quilt I made.jpg

Step 1: Prepare Your Backing

  • Provide a well pressed backing.

  • If piecing the backing, sew the fabric pieces with a 1/2 inch seam allowance and press open to reduce the fabric bulk.

  • I prefer the seam to go horizontal on the machine but will work with a vertical seam provided the 1/2 seam allowance is used.

  • Square the backing, make sure it is at least 4" larger on all four sides of the quilt top.

  • Add a safety pin to the top left corner of the quilt so I know how to load it.

Step 2: Prepare The Quilt Top

  • Be sure all loose threads are trimmed from the quilt top.

  • Press it well.

  • Do not add extra embellishments like buttons, beads, crystals, etc. to your quilt top until it has been quilted.

  • Add a safety pin to the top left corner of the quilt so I know how to load it.

Step 3: Delivering the Quilt

  • Bring the backing and the quilt top, keeping them separate.  If you are providing batting, bring that but do not sandwich your backing, batting and quilt top.
